What they built
A doubly curved concrete shell, formed over a net of steel cables and a textile membrane instead of conventional timber formwork. The shell is layered: an inner concrete skin, then heating and cooling coils and insulation, then an outer concrete skin, with thin-film photovoltaic cells bonded to the outside. The whole thing supports itself with no beams.
The curve is what gives it strength, in the same way an eggshell is strong despite being thin.
Why the curve matters
Flat concrete roofs need thickness and reinforcement to span any distance. A curved shell spreads load through the surface and can be far thinner for the same span, which saves material and weight. The curved surface also presents solar cells to the sun at a range of angles through the day.
The trick was building the formwork cheaply, which the cable net solved.
The heating and cooling layer
Coils inside the shell circulate water to heat or cool the space below, using the roof's own mass as a thermal buffer. In a climate like ours, where the roof takes a beating from the sun all afternoon, using that mass instead of fighting it is an interesting idea.
Conventional houses here do the opposite: a thin roof over a hot attic, with the air conditioning running against it.
What it means for ordinary buildings
Not much yet. This is a research prototype for a specific building, not a product a local contractor can order. But the ideas travel: thin shells, integrated thermal mass, solar built into the surface rather than bolted on top. Some of that will appear in commercial buildings first.
For houses, the practical version of this is still a light-colored roof with good insulation and panels on top.
Why I wrote it up
Because a customer sent me the article and asked whether they could have one. The answer is no, but the question was a good one: people want roofs that do more than keep rain out. The industry is slowly moving that way.
Until it arrives, keep the roof you have dry and ventilated and it will serve you well.
What to take from it
The lesson for a homeowner is not the concrete shell but the thinking behind it: treat the roof as part of the house's energy system, not just its lid. Light color, insulation, ventilation and panels are the achievable version of that thinking on a house in this valley, and all four can be done during a re-roof.
