What makes it different
Standard architectural shingles are two layers laminated together. Luxury shingles stack more layers of fiberglass mat and asphalt, up to several times the thickness of a three-tab, and are cut to reproduce the deep shadow lines and irregular edges of slate or hand-split shake. The extra mass gives them a higher wind rating and a longer warranty.
Manufacturers often call them lifetime shingles because of the warranty term, which is longer than most owners keep a house.
The look
From the street a well-chosen luxury shingle reads as slate or shake. Up close the granule surface gives it away, but on a two-story house nobody is up close. They suit larger homes, steeper pitches and traditional styles, and they come in the deep grays and browns those looks want.
On a low-slope ranch house the effect is lost; save the money there.
Lifespan and maintenance
Thickness buys longevity. The extra asphalt takes longer to dry out in our heat, and the heavier shingle resists lifting in wind. Maintenance is the same as any shingle: keep it clear, keep the flashings sealed, do not walk it more than necessary. Very little else is needed.
Good attic ventilation is still the single biggest factor in how long it lasts.
Cost and weight
It sits between standard architectural shingle and real tile in cost. It is heavier than standard shingle but far lighter than tile or slate, so it can go on a house framed for shingle without structural work, which real slate cannot.
That weight advantage is what makes it a practical shake or slate substitute on older houses.
Where it makes sense here
Older two-story homes in Redlands and the hillside parts of Loma Linda that once had shake and now need a Class A roof; newer custom houses where tile is not the style; any house where the owner wants a distinctive roof and intends to stay. For a plain tract house being sold soon, standard architectural shingle is the better spend.

Installation notes
Luxury shingle needs the manufacturer's nailing pattern followed exactly because the thickness changes where the nail line sits, and it needs matching hip and ridge caps rather than cut-down field shingles. Starter courses and drip edge should be sized for the extra thickness. Done properly, it is one of the best-looking roofs money can buy on a shingle budget.
